  Tisno

Tisno is the youngest town on the island. It is situated at the point where the island of Murter almost touches the land with which it was connected by a bascule bridge in 1832. Tisno emerged as a result of the local population retreating from advancing Turkish conquestors. It was named after the narrow straits dividing island from the mainland. First time was mentioned under this name in 1474. The drawbridge connecting the island of Murter with the mainland, situated in the centre of Tisno, is open during the tourist season every day from 9 to 9:30 a.m. and from 5 to 5:30 p.m. The new part of town was built on land and named Gomilica. The town is known for its spacious shops, green vegetation and long quay.

The land part of Tisno is growing fast in recent times. Many summerhouses, suites, restaurants and small family hotels were built there. The centre of the old town is on the island. Southeast from the bascule bridge and behind the last houses and the church of Sv. Andrija lays a rocky beach. A wood shelters this beach and a 1000 metres long promenade stretches alongside it. Tisno became an important religious centre owing to great votive pilgrimage of Our Lady of Karavaj.

Today, the inhabitants of Tisno, are farmers, fishers, but the most important industry in Tisno is turism, which finaly glows in middle Dalmatia.

Climate
Average air temperature in July and August is around 25° C and a pleasant landward breeze moderates high summer temperatures making days bearable. Average sea temperature is around 24° C in summer and the island has around 2700 hours of sunshine a year.

Sacred objects
At the initiative of the Šibenik bishop Arigoni, in the middle of the 17th century, from the area of Bergam in Italy, 20 rich families came to make their home in the parish, and later even more came to the town of Tisno. Their graves can be found at the parish church. The family Gelpi brought with them a painting from the sanctuary of the lady of the source near Carravaggia (near Milan), wich dates back to 1428, and was painted on a wooden surface. The painting was first kept in a home chapel, and later the family bought some land on the hill Broščica above Tisno and built a chapel there in 1720. There are two churches from the 17th century located in Tisno - St. Rok and St. Andrija. Tisno became an important religious centre owing to great votive pilgrimage of Our Lady of Karavaj.
